Jakarta, July 21, 2022 – The palm oil industry currently plays a very important role in the global industry due to its enormous growth and its contribution to the world's supply of vegetable oil-related needs. Indonesia is a major palm oil producer. It controls 55% of the global market share for this commodity, which also contribute 3.5% of Indonesian economic growth. Palm oil itself has various advantages compared to other vegetable oil-producing commodities. It has been proven to be more efficient in land use and has more productive yields. In addition, the palm oil industry serves a strategic role in the Indonesian economy.
"The palm oil industry does not want to create this impression that it is an industry that destroys the environments where its plantations are located, nor does it want local communities near these plantations to think that the industry does not pay attention to the welfare of people and farmers who works on these lands. Towards these ends, we have continued to maintain our balance between People, Planet and Prosperity in every single facet of our Company's operations as a way of developing plantations that are both environmentally friendly and can improve living standards for local communities," said President Commissioner of PT Triputra Agro Persada Tbk (TAPG), Arif P. Rachmat.
The President Director of TAPG, Tjandra Karya Hermanto, explained. "TAPG emphasizes Sustainability Policies and Commitments in this scope of its activities as a way of adhering to the Company's Vision and Mission. It is also our way of maintaining the spirit of the Policies and Commitments of our founders and leaders. The Company’s first Sustainability Policy launched in 2013.”
In the journey of implementing this Sustainability Policy throughout the years, TAPG has received various inputs and suggestions for future improvements. It has collaborated with Daemeter Consulting to formulate a new Sustainability Policy, which it launched today at the Ballroom of Hotel JS Luwansa Jakarta. It was during this occasion that TAPG shared with the public the achievements it has made thus far while also laying out its targets for everything environment-related until 2036.
"TAPG's strategy is to become a carbon neutral company by 2036 by reducing emissions from its palm oil operations, by increasing its carbon sequestration through the protection of conservation areas, by implementing a "NDP" (No Deforestation and No Peat) policy in its supply chain, and by offsetting its remaining carbon," said President Director of Daemeter Consulting, Aisyah Sileuw.
"As a consultant, we will provide our assistance for the implementation work the Company wants to carry out. We will also do our part to ensure that the Company is on-track to achieve the vision it wants to achieve in 2036," Aisyah continued, during a presentation on TAPG's Sustainability Roadmap.
In addition, the Company has aligned its sustainability commitment with the Indonesian government's agenda in fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that the United Nations established in New York in 2015.
The Commissioner of TAPG, Prof. Dr. Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, added the Board of Commissioners' views on the matter. "We, the Board of Commissioners, have witnessed the Company's achievements and would like to express our appreciation for its implementation of Environmental, Social and Control Management, which is also known as ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance)," Kuntoro said, adding that TAPG understands its success as a company is not only measured by profits on behalf of shareholders and that taking this environmental course of action will lead TAPG to gain positive value in the Indonesian financial market, for investors and for society at large.
"As a Commissioner, I will provide my supervision to ensure that the Company's Sustainability Policy is carried out properly and so that TAPG can truly be a sustainable palm oil company that reduces its impact on the environment, solves social problems, and is really serious about being a company that operates with honest and transparent practices," Kuntoro added.
